Derrek Pugh is a leader in program development for children in the Greater Columbia and surrounding areas. He served as the Programming Supervisor for Richland County Recreation Commission for seven years where he designed, implemented, and supervised summer camp and after school programs for over 1,000 children annually. In addition, Derrek built solid relationships with community partners, securing grants and donations that he utilized to expand his over $400,000 budget.
In April 2018 Derrek, shifted his focus and began to pursue running his non-profit organization, Evolution SC, LLC full-time. Founded in 2017, Evolution SC provides independent living skills and leadership essentials to youth in the Columbia area. Through Evolution SC, Derrek impacts lives daily through mentoring, advocacy, and speaking engagements. He also serves as the Executive Director for Rural Life Resources in Orangeburg, SC. In that role, Derrek has created community development resources to include tutoring for local children, and senior programs for individuals 65 and older.
Derrek is extremely involved in his local county government, serving as Vice Chairman on the Board of Zoning and Appeals for the Town of Blythewood, SC. Derrek enjoys mapping out the strategic plan for the town with other community leaders. Derrek serves as a board member for the Ray of Hope USDA feeding program, the Carolina Legacy Council and the Capital City Club Membership Committee in Columbia. He is also a proud member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated.
Derrek’s experience has prepared him for his numerous speaking engagements which have included serving as moderator for the SC Parks Association Central District meeting, workshop facilitator for the SC Male Leadership Academy, and visiting professor at Benedict College.
Derrek is a graduate of Benedict College and Webster University. In his free time, he enjoys spending time traveling and experiencing new cultures with his wife, Teshieka.
